One thing I’ve tried to do in life is to get my ego out of the way, live my values and not worry about what other people think. I thought I was starting to learn how to do this, but a recent study implies it’s not a matter of experience, it’s that a part of my brain is starting to deteriorate. Whatever. That works for me too. 🙂
What about you? Do you find it easier to get your ego out of the way and to ignore the judgments of other people as you get older?
Definitely. I think I have the experience now to know my strengths and weaknesses and quirks and foibles. That I’m just another person (and so are the others).
Evan,
So you believe it’s more experience and practice than deteriorating brains. I agree with you, but the idea does tickle my funny bone.
It is extremely difficult to get the ego out of the way. But I use the word ‘ego’ to identify that part of my being that is responsible for my sense of doership. The other ego is no problem. I have come to the conclusion long ago that almost all people are too busy thinking about themselves to have time to think of me!
In this case, perhaps the wisdom have its role than senility.
Rummuser,
Yes, I love that joke,
tikno,
I agree, but I’m not sure it makes much difference. Whatever works.
I led an unusual life as such and I know that!
I believe that I use my experience of wisdom to have me remain sane for me…
I usually don’t usually take advice easily although I might listen and then adapt whatever suits me.
When I first started at Uni in 2006 everyone ‘had’ to know what I was going to do when I finished. Plenty gave me advice on the subjects that thought I should be taking, and more advice on why I shouldn’t be taking xyz.
Now this year…those people seem silent. I suspect that they have accepted that I jumped streams so much they are confused…or maybe they think I took their collective advice on what was best for me!
It’s interesting that recently I was talking about the Music paper I took and that finally – SIX months down the track they found our coursework – i.e. got my essay back just last week! And then people get all confused on the word ‘Music’ – I took a popular music industry paper (theories etc)
I had also taken some other musical theory type papers – not about playing an instrument though…I loved them! I learnt heaps plus I find wisdom through them in the business sense.
So what am I going to do, afterwards – the quest/answer is all in the 3 little words: Work in Process (WIP)
Cathy,
It sounds as if you’ve been doing just great. I’m looking forward to hearing about the next chapter in your life. As you know, I think of life as a shared adventure, and I appreciate your sharing with us.
thanks Jean
