Doing the Best We Can With What We Have Left

Before:

East end of the house.

View from the east deck.

View towards the east end of the clearing.

After:

View from the edge of the clearing looking east.

View from the edge of the clearing looking south of east.

It’s certainly not as pretty without the trees, but cutting down the biggest ones has given the clearing a feeling of space. It’s not without its charm. It’s the best we can do with what we have left, and it will be interesting to see how the view changes in the next few years.

Has life handed you any lemons lately? How do you like lemonade?

Thanks to Evan, bikehikebabe, Mike, Looney, Rummuser, Ursula, tammy, Cathy and Diane for commenting on last week’s post.

Mostly it has been lemonade lately I’m glad to say.

  2. Mike Goad says:

Lemonade for the most part. Heading for Moab today. 😉

  3. bikehikebabe says:

Interesting to see the house before the fire. The railing on the balcony was on the ground & I thought it was a FENCE.

Mike, there’s biking trails near Moab. Rent some bicycles? I think the Colorado River goes through there too.

  4. Mike Goad says:

We’ll actually be staying in Arches National Park. We are not in good enough shape for bike trails, — osteoporosis for Karen and weight for me — but will do some hikes. Yesterday at Colorado National Monument we did a couple of hikes that came up to about 5 miles altogether.

  5. Jean says:

    Evan and Mike,
    I’m happy for you both.

    bikehikebabe,
It dawned on me that most people didn’t know what the house looked like before the fire. I thought some might be curious, and it was a good excuse for me to look through old pictures.

  6. Mike Goad says:

Oops! We didn’t leave for Moab as expected. 🙁

We’re still in Grand Junction. While trying to “fix” an issue with the towed vehicle lights when connected to the motorhome, I saw that the brake lights on the camper weren’t working. After exhausting everything I could figure out about on what might be the problem, I was able to to extend our stay by a day and contact a RV repairman.

It’s all fixed now 😉 , but yesterday was a bit of a lemon of a day. 🙁

Heading to Arches National Park a little later. 🙂

  7. Jean says:

    Mike,
Sorry about the glitch but am glad it’s fixed and you are on your way again. Our plans were turned on their heads today by the building permit people. I’ll write more about that in future posts… for now I’ll just say things aren’t dull around here.

  8. Rummuser says:

The prosthesis that went crook is the lemon and the forthcoming stint at the hospital should be the lemonade with all those fawning nurses!

  9. Jean says:

    Rummuser,
Good luck! I’ve been thinking of you often.

  10. Stephan Hilson says:

It has a nice view before especially with the sight of the trees. But I guess the clearing is the best move at that time. It is because clearing could be able to provide the necessary space for another things, which an owner could be able to do. And having a lemonade seems a wonderful idea.

  11. Cathy in NZ says:

good to see what a gorgeous home you have lost to the fires and the way the landscape looked beforehand…

thanks Jean, hope everything is going well with your new beginnings there

  12. Jean says:

    Stephan,
Thanks for coming by. Yes, clearing the place out and looking at the remaining views is the best we can do.

    Cathy,
    Thank you!

  13. tammy says:

    i am late getting here.
i love your pictures. even after the fire there is a sense of peace.
my brother’s wife died last sunday night. cancer.
much suffering. much courage. much saddness and yet relief.
he said, “tam i hope it won’t hurt your feelings but i have to go away by myself for awhile. i’ve got to just breathe. and i intend to breathe under some very tall pine trees.”
he’ll go backpacking in the pecos.
    he’s an outsdoorsman so i won’t worry.
i hope the best for you and your new place.
    love,
    tammy j

  14. Cathy in NZ says:

Tammy, your brother truly understands what is best for him…but on the other hand you have to grieve also for the loss, even it was a relief. Take care….C in NZ

  15. Jean says:

    tammy,
I agree with Cathy. Please take care.

  16. tammy says:

friends like this. the uncommon place of a website. at least uncommon for me. like a well.
    thank you.

  17. bikehikebabe says:

I’m learning a little more about you Tammy. You don’t live in Kalamazo or India. We use to backpack in the pecos. Near Santa Fe ski Basin is the closest @ 40 mi. from here. Cowles is 80 or so mi. away.
